I'm going to go out on a limb here....but I think the reputation Ishtar has is highly misplaced. Quite a funny film if you ask me.

Raiders of the Lost Ark...how it was meant to be seen

After reading recently that to prepare for making a film director Steven Soderburgh watches Raiders of the Lost Ark three times I was intrigued. But not that he watches it that many times, but that he does so in Black and White.

Going for a full emulation of the serial style Raiders set out to pay tribute to, seeing the effective use of light and shadow highlighted by the black and white was an amazing experience. The film already ranks high on my list but this just brought it up to a whole new level.

So next time you feel the desire to visit the wonderful film, drop your saturation and enjoy a hidden difference to this wonderful gem.

2013 movies!

It's time once again for movies coming out this year that I am looking forward to.

Oblivion 4/19 This one I am really torn on. Interesting looking scifi, directed by the guy who did TRON: Legacy but starring Tom Cruise (who I really really can't stand) so I am not sure.
VERDICT: Wait for reviews before seeing it or waiting for disc.

Iron Man 3  5/3 RDJ and Shane Black back together again?
VERDICT: See opening day.

Man of Steel 6/14 hmmmm I do enjoy Superman but since there hasn't been a good Superman film since the second Donner film I am not sure. Other than Suckerpunch, Zach Snyder has always entertained me and with Chris Nolan producing I am more than slightly interested.
VERDICT: Probably see in theater.

Monsters University 6/21 Mike and Sully the early years? YES!
VERDICT: You haven't seen a Pixar film in a theater since Finding Nemo so probably yes.

Kick-Ass 2 6/28 The first one was entertaining and a decent adaptation of the book.
VERDICT: Rent

Pacific Rim 7/12 Giant Monsters fighting Giant Robots starring Dr. Mrs' cousin Clifton? It's like G. del Toro
jacked right into my brain and asked what I wanted.
VERDICT: See opening day. Possibly twice.

The Wolverine 7/26 is this finally the Wolverine film we are waiting for? Hopefully.
VERDICT: Rent

RED2 8/2 The first one was a rocking great time and a lot of fun. Way more fun that it should have been. Showed 'The Expendables' how "old guys kicking ass" should be done.
VERDICT: Go see it if you don't have any other plans that weekend

Elysium
8/9 Looks like a neat scifi film and directed by the guy who did District 9
VERDICT: Go see it

Riddick 9/6 I enjoyed Pitch Black but never saw the second one.
VERDICT: rent it

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For 10/4 The first one was a marvelous adaptation so I expect the same. But no need to rush out to see it.
VERDICT: rent it

The Worlds End 10/25 Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman directed by Edgar Wright. A pub crawl turns into an apocalyptic world saving adventure? How could this be anything but amazing?
VERDICT:  See it!

Thor: The Dark World 11/8 As long as Earth isn't punished for some god's screw up this time you can count me in. Who am I kidding..Chris Eccleston is the bad guy. Of course I want to see it.
VERDICT: See it

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug 12/13 Not even gonna talk about this one.
VERDICT: See it. Twice. Wear your hobbit feet.

End of the year quick reviews

I was off work for the last half of December so Dr. Mrs and I saw a few films.  Here are my quick reviews.

-Life of Pi: pretty but eh....

-Cloud Atlas: Enjoyed it and will want to see again but I just didn't feel the connections between the time periods was all there.  Maybe a second viewing and reading the book will help.

-Dredd: An excellent film version of what is Judge Dredd. A bit overly violent, but fits well. Shot and filmed quite gorgeously for such a violent film.

-Brave: Gorgeously animated, but couldn't identify with the characters. I honestly didn't care about her at all.

-Robin Hood (2010): An interesting take on the legend. A bit long, but entertaining.
